Illinois Rocstar was named one of four winners of the Science-informed Machine Learning to Accelerate Real Time Decisions in the Subsurface Visualization Platform Prize Challenge (SMART-VP). RocVision – a system for visualizing and analyzing 3D and 2D data to aid in exploration of subsurface data – was submitted in mid-2021 and is undergoing the next phase of design and development. Initial designs for RocVision enable the user to put the visualizations that matter to them front and center. Illinois Rocstar will implement web-based visualization, scientific, and data analysis tools so that RocVision can be applied in both desktop and cloud-based environments.
The purpose of the SMART VP is to publish a visualization platform that can be used readily by experts (i.e., scientists, engineers, subsurface operators) and non-experts (landowners) alike to interact with comprehensive visualizations to enhance real time decisions about subsurface utilization. The challenge and award were sponsored the US Department of Energy Office of Fossil Energy as a two-phase competition. Illinois Rocstar was one of four winners in Phase I and will submit a Phase II challenge later this year.
More about this challenge can be found in this press release issued by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).
